The problem boiler is in Bedford and gives an F1 code, ignition failure. Whats this likely to be? Venturi blocked? Tony Glazier

On CH warms up, gas valve closes not at any fixed temp. then tries to reignite a couple of times gas valve opens for a second but no ignition then goes to F1 failure code. CH dose not modulate. I have a customer with an 80e that works fine in HW mode, so I know the 'gas train' is in good working order. However it won't run in CH mode. Pump starts but ignition sequence doesn't. It's a simple boiler with few parts to be wrong as far as I can see (I'm working on it with no MI). The pump flow switch works, and I've changed the CH thermistor with no effect. Can't think of anything else to try apart from a new control board. I hate buying PCBs without some some of proof that it's failed, but here I have none, apart from the boiler refusing to start. There is a large red LCD display on the front of the boiler that displays "2" most of the time, but sometimes this changes to "3" or "4". Is this a fault code? (It's not displaying F2, F3, F4 etc like the 80E does). Any help much appreciated. Cheers, Mike

I only have manuals for 80E and 80EC models. If there's a LED display showing 2, 3 or 4, you might be looking at a Honeywell digital controller working normally. If it also displays 6 with the burner off (call for heat on, boiler at setpoint, wait), this would tend to confirm the controller type

Action Check flow thermostat / Check system not frozen. Comment - Boiler shuts down F3 - Fault Heat exchange blockage. Action Check main heat exchanger / Check domestic heat exchanger. Comment Boiler shuts down & pump runs F4 - Fault Domestic hot water thermistor faulty. Action Check thermistor / leads. Comment Domestic hot water is available but poor. Additional info: Flashing decimal point when DWW temperature is desplayed - This indicates that the domestic heat exchanger may be partially or fully blocked, the pump may be runnig too slowly or the central heating flow rate is too low. I actually have the installation manual for a Protherm 80e boiler as I have one of these myself. If you need any more info I'd be happy to help. If you need to replace / repair the PCB my I highly recoment [Ed - Link suspended while we check it out]. I sent my PCB off for repair on Tuesday afternoon and received it back on Thursday morning. Total cost Ј50.80 Originally the Protherm 80e was made by Glow Worm for Travis Perkins. Travis Perkins have changed supplier so no longer stock any of these boilers / parts. For Info / parts no's you need to call 01773 881383 (Heatcall). Then call 01684 773737 (european spares?) with the part Nos to place your order. Differences exist between the 80e and 80E. I can tell you that the fans are different but the ignition module is the same part No. There might be other differences but I'm not sure what they are? I would like to see a copy of the 80e to scan. The fault codes you give above are common to the manual I have and also the Jaguar. Is there any chance that I can borrow your 80e manual as several others have mentioned there are two differing models but even with a fair amount of research I have not been able to get confirmation that there are differing models. If I could borrow your manual then there would be copies of both models held in the manuals library.

I took photos of one on my mobile but the light was terrible and they didn't turn out to be publishable. From memory the two are completely different inside too, although I repaired them about three months apart and the faults were completely different and my memory may be flawed...

Slight variances between the symptoms of both but the boiler locks out when the tap is turned off after using it for some time. The occupier says same happens on heating aswell. I have attended once but as the rule goes it did not lockout. Any ideas how to diagnose would be much appreciated My hunch would be a blocked HE but then i would like to eliminate everything else b4 hand. Thanking you in advance

If we disbelieve the occupier for a moment, could it be a water flow switch sticking on? Thermistors or thermostats having drifted could be assessed with a contact thermometer to see how hot things really get.
